Remember picking a tape off the shelf, grabbing one box of candy at the counter, and piling into a blanket fort? Here's how to bring that back for your kids, with dye free candy swaps, snacks that skip the sugar crash, and holiday finds you can buy this year.
Turn the hallway into the Friday night rental run. Kids walk the shelf, pick a movie, and check out at the counter.
Line up DVD cases or printed tape covers on a bookshelf. Add handwritten shelf signs: New Releases, Family, Holiday. Each kid "rents" one.
Print a card with each kid's name. Punch it every movie night, and the fifth rental gets a bonus treat or picks the snack.
Put a basket of candy boxes by the "register." Each kid picks one, just like at the counter. Fill it with the dye free swaps below.
Stick a "Be Kind, Rewind" label on the case. Keep a late fee jar where the fee is a tiny chore, like carrying the popcorn bowls to the sink.
Sleeping bags and couch cushions on the floor, a blanket fort, and any old boombox, VCR or tube TV you can dig out of the garage.
Glow sticks, slap bracelets, scrunchies and gel pens to doodle with during the movie. Flannel shirts or a Spice Girls look for pajamas.
Kids decorate cardboard boxes as cars and "park" in front of the TV. Hand out paper tickets at the door.
Pause in the middle for a bathroom and refill break with a few 90s trivia questions. Winners pick tomorrow's movie.
Tamagotchi, Polly Pocket, Furby and Bop It all have current versions in stores. One of these in the candy basket makes a fun surprise.
The 90s movie candy you remember, and a dye free box to put in the basket instead.
Formulas are changing a lot this year, so read the label on every box.
Usually made with Red 40 or other dyes: original Skittles, Starburst, Sour Patch Kids, Nerds, Airheads, Jolly Rancher, Swedish Fish, Reese's Pieces. Find the swaps at Amazon, Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, Thrive Market, or straight from YumEarth and Hammond's. Holiday candy sells out in December.
Put something with protein, fat or fiber on the plate next to anything sweet. Savory food when the movie starts, candy at halftime.
